Short answer: If the business has closed, the profile is not deleted; it is marked as “Permanently closed”; so customers do not go to a closed address. If a break is being taken, “Temporarily closed” is selected. Removing the profile from the account only means leaving the management; the listing continues to appear on Maps.

The decision to close a Google business is often made in a hurry: the business moves, takes a break, changes hands, or closes completely, and deleting the profile is the first thing that comes to mind. However, the procedure people search for as “how to delete a Google business” and Google’s “Permanently closed” label do not produce the same result; removing the profile from an account does not mean removing the business from Maps either. In situations such as a move or a phone number change, the right step is to update the existing profile rather than close it.

This article separately addresses which option applies to each situation, how to follow the steps using the menu names on Google’s Turkish help pages, and what happens to reviews. Onur Freelance is not an official Google support channel; it does not close or remove profiles on Google’s behalf, and the information provided here is based on Google’s publicly available help pages.

How to close a Google Business Profile: a 62-second video explanation
Video transcript

How do you close a Google Business Profile? In most cases, the profile is not deleted; depending on the business’s situation, it is marked as closed, updated, or transferred to the new owner. For breaks longer than seven days, select Temporarily closed; for shorter breaks, select special hours. A business that has closed completely is marked Permanently closed; when moving, its address is updated. Select Edit profile and Business hours, use Edit to mark it as Temporarily or Permanently closed, and save. Google reviews the change before it is published. Removing the profile from an account does not delete the business from Maps. Photos, updates, and review replies are permanently lost; users’ reviews remain in place. Do not create a new profile when moving, and do not mark a relocating business as permanently closed. Use special hours for short vacations, and transfer primary ownership rather than sharing a password when the business changes hands. All the situations and Google’s help pages are on this page. If it is unclear which option is appropriate, you can write on WhatsApp. Onur Freelance dot com.

Let us identify the right option together before closing the profile

Choosing between deletion, marking as closed, and updating can have consequences that are difficult to reverse. The profile’s current situation is examined in a free preliminary assessment; a simple list shows which steps the business owner should take from their own account.

Should you close, delete, or update a Google business?

Some needs described as closing a Google business actually require an update. Google’s help pages address different situations with different procedures; the most common mistake is trying to solve every situation by “deleting.” The table below places the situations alongside the approach Google describes:

SituationCorrect procedureHow the profile appears
Break longer than 7 days, seasonal closure, closure for an unspecified periodMark as “Temporarily closed”Appears with the “Temporarily closed” label
Break of 7 days or lessSpecial business hoursThe profile appears open, with different hours shown for those days
The business has closed completelyMark as “Permanently closed”Clearly indicates that the business is closed
The business has moved to a new addressUpdate the address on the existing profileThe same profile appears with the new address
The business has been sold or transferredTransfer primary ownershipThe profile continues under the new owner
A second profile has been created for the same businessRemove the duplicate or suggest a mergeThe duplicate profile is not displayed

Removing the profile from the account is not the first choice in any of the situations in this table. This is because removal only eliminates management access and the content added by the owner, rather than the business listing itself; the sections below explain this in detail.

The difference between temporarily closed and permanently closed

There are two closure statuses in Business Profile. According to Google’s marking a business as closed page, the profile appears on Maps and Search as “Temporarily closed” or “Permanently closed,” depending on the status selected. Neither option eliminates the profile; they only inform customers of the business’s current situation.

When should you select temporarily closed for a Google business?

Google asks businesses to use “Temporarily closed” if they have been closed for more than 7 days, have closed for the off-season, or do not know when they will reopen. A holiday break, a few days of renovations, or a short leave does not fall into this category; special hours are set for closures of 7 days or less. During temporary closure, the profile stays in place, and the status is reversed from the same screen when the business reopens.

What does marking a Google business as permanently closed do?

The “Permanently closed” label is for businesses that have completely ceased operating. According to Google, after this label is applied, the profile may continue appearing in Search and Maps to users searching for the business, with a clear indication that it is closed. Google’s profile removal page also states that a business marked as closed is not immediately removed from Maps, but is gradually removed over time.

This label is not appropriate for a business that is moving. If a business continuing to operate at a new address appears as “Permanently closed,” customers assume it has shut down completely and do not look for the new address.

Steps to close a Google business: the business hours screen

The closure status is selected in the profile’s business hours section rather than in a separate menu. The sequence Google describes is as follows:

  1. Go to Business Profile using the Google Account that manages the profile.
  2. Select “Edit profile” and then “Business hours.”
  3. Use “Edit” next to “Business hours” to mark “Temporarily closed” or “Permanently closed.”
  4. Select “Save.”

For businesses with multiple branches, the same procedure is performed in bulk by selecting locations in Business Profile Manager and using the “Actions” menu. Google reviews changes to the profile before publishing them; according to the address management page, changes usually take 10 minutes to appear, but in some cases can take up to 30 days.

How do you reopen a business marked as closed?

According to Google’s marking a business as reopened page, select “Edit” on the same “Business hours” screen and choose “Open with main hours” or “Open with no main hours.” Select the days the business is open using the checkboxes, set the hours, and complete the process with “Save.” This is where temporary closure has an advantage over deleting the profile: reversing it takes just a few steps.

How do you delete a Google business? Removing a profile versus removal from Maps

The procedure searched for as “deleting a Google business account” means, in Google’s terminology, removing the Business Profile from the Google Account, and does not delete the business from Maps. Google’s removing a Business Profile from a Google Account page explicitly states that the business may continue appearing in Search and Maps even after removal. What is deleted is management of the profile and the content added by its owner, rather than the business listing.

Steps to remove the profile from the account

  1. Go to Business Profile; select “Business Profile settings” from the “More” menu.
  2. Select “Remove Business Profile” and then “Remove profile content and managers.”
  3. If desired, enable the option to mark the business as permanently closed.
  4. Complete the process with “Continue,” “Remove,” and “Done.”

Only the primary owner can perform this procedure; newly added owners and managers must wait 7 days. Removal permanently deletes the profile’s updates, photos, videos, and review replies, and these cannot be recovered. If you want to manage the profile again later, verification is required again; content and reviews added by users are not removed.

Google business removal: when should you request deletion from Maps?

Completely removing the business from Search and Maps is a separate request. According to Google’s requesting removal from Search and Maps page, this route is for businesses that have never existed or are not eligible to be listed on Google; listings that are not at the specified address, are misleading, or violate policies can also be reported. The request is submitted by selecting the business on Google Maps and following “Suggest an edit” and “Place is closed or not here,” and anyone who is signed in can create a request.

Negative reviews are not considered grounds for removal. For a business that actually operated and has closed, Google’s recommended route is to mark the profile as “Permanently closed.”

If the business is moving: address changes and reverification

A new profile is not created for a relocating business. Google’s resolving duplicate profile issues page asks you not to create a new profile for the new location and to update the existing profile with the new address. A Google business address change is made by selecting “Edit profile,” “Location,” and “Edit” next to “Business location.”

According to Google’s editing a profile page, a business that moves to a new address after verification must be verified again. If verification proceeds by postcard, do not change the name, address, or category while waiting for the code; having permanent signage ready at the new address also makes the process easier. Details about the pin location, service area, and hiding the address are explained in the address section of the guide to adding a business to Google Maps.

How do you change a Google business phone number?

Changing a phone number does not require closing the business either; the number is updated from the profile editing screen. Open the profile in Google Search, select “Edit profile,” change the number, and complete the process with “Save”; in the Google Maps app, the same step is performed from the “Business” tab at the bottom right. Google’s profile editing page and business information guidelines establish the following rules for phone numbers:

  • In addition to the primary number, 2 more numbers can be entered; these can be mobile or landline numbers, but not fax numbers.
  • Use a local phone number instead of a call center helpline whenever possible.
  • The number must be under the business’s direct control.
  • If desired, the phone number can be hidden on the profile.

Phone number changes are also reviewed by Google before publication. Because Google’s verification methods include a call or text message to the business number, it is important for the new number to be active and reachable. Updating the number on the website, social media, and signage on the same day prevents customers from seeing different numbers in different places.

Let us put the steps in order together for a move, closure, or transfer

For a business that moves, changes hands, or takes a break, the sequence matters: ownership comes first, then the address and number, and finally the closure status. The profile’s current stage is examined in a free preliminary assessment; procedures remain within the business owner’s own account, and no password or verification code is requested.

How do you report and remove a duplicate profile?

Google asks that only one profile be created per business, and profiles considered duplicates are not displayed in Search and Maps. Duplicate listings usually arise when a new profile is created during a move, a former employee or agency creates a separate listing, or a second profile is opened for different services of the same business.

A duplicate profile you manage

If the duplicate profile is managed in the same account, delete it using the steps for removing it from the account. Google reminds users that when a duplicate profile is removed, all its content and associated managers are also removed. Do not start the procedure without making sure the listing to be deleted is the duplicate rather than the verified original profile.

A duplicate profile you do not manage

For a duplicate created by someone else or one you cannot access, submit an edit suggestion on Google Maps; Google states that all merge requests are subject to review. A merge brings reviews together on one profile, but replies to reviews may be lost. If two different businesses have been merged by mistake, contact the support team; the official application routes are collected on the Google Business Profile support page.

If the business changes hands: transferring ownership

When a business is sold or transferred, the profile is transferred to the new owner rather than closed; this keeps the same profile live together with its review history. According to Google’s transferring primary ownership page, the sequence is as follows:

  1. First add the new owner to the profile as an owner or manager.
  2. The current primary owner follows “More,” “Business Profile settings,” and “People and access.”
  3. Select the new owner, use “Edit” next to “Access” to choose “Primary owner,” and select “Save.”

Only the current primary owner can transfer primary ownership. During the first 7 days, the newly added person cannot delete the profile, remove other owners and managers, or change primary ownership. If the former owner cannot be reached or will not release the profile, the route to follow is explained separately in the Google Business Profile ownership request guide.

If the business name also changes with the transfer, Google’s profile editing page states that reverification may be required. The new name must be the actual name used on signage and official documents.

What happens to reviews on a closed or removed profile?

Because reviews are content added by customers, they are not deleted when the profile owner closes or removes the profile. According to the official pages, the situation varies depending on the procedure:

  • Marking as temporarily or permanently closed: Because the profile may continue to appear, reviews also remain in place with the profile.
  • Removing the profile from the account: The owner’s replies to reviews are permanently deleted; reviews written by users are not removed.
  • Merging duplicate profiles: Reviews are merged, but replies to reviews may be lost.
  • Updating the existing profile during a move: Because the same profile is used, reviews remain on the same listing.

Deleting a profile to get rid of negative reviews does not work: the removed profile may continue appearing on Maps, reviews stay in place, and the ability to respond is also lost. How to report reviews that violate policies is addressed separately in the removing Google business reviews article.

Common mistakes during closure and relocation, and the correct approach

Most mistakes in Google business closure and relocation processes stem from the idea that starting the profile from scratch is easier. The most common mistakes and their correct alternatives are as follows:

  • Creating a new profile when moving and abandoning the old one: The two listings may be considered duplicates, and the duplicate profile is not displayed; the correct route is to update the existing profile with the new address.
  • Marking a relocating business as “Permanently closed”: Customers assume the business has closed; update the address instead of applying a closure label.
  • Selecting “Temporarily closed” for a short vacation: Use special business hours for breaks of 7 days or less.
  • Only removing a closed business from the account: The listing may continue appearing on Maps; this is why the permanently closed option on the removal screen is enabled.
  • Sharing the account password during a transfer: Ownership is transferred from the “People and access” screen, eliminating the need to share a password.
  • Changing the number only on the website: Update the profile, website, social media, and signage on the same day.

What these mistakes have in common is taking a step that is difficult to reverse for a problem that can be corrected. Consider deletion and creating a new profile after trying the other options.

Common practice and our approach

A common practice is to create a new profile or delete the old one to solve the problem quickly; this looks practical in the short term but puts the verified listing and review history at risk. In our approach, the situation is classified first: a closure, short break, move, transfer, or duplicate listing. Then the procedure Google describes for that situation is selected, and the steps are taken from the business owner’s own account.

In most cases, the sequence followed for closing, moving, or transferring a Google business is the same:

  1. Check the profile’s primary owner and users on the “People and access” screen.
  2. Match the situation to the single corresponding procedure in the table: closure, short break, relocation, transfer, or duplicate listing.
  3. Plan address, number, and name changes with possible reverification in mind; do not change information while waiting for the code.
  4. Synchronize the information on the website, social media, and signage with the profile on the same day.
  5. Monitor whether the change has gone live throughout Google’s review period.

As a web design and digital marketing studio based in Maltepe, Onur Freelance has handled business profiles together with website and local SEO work since 2019. During this work, primary ownership remains with the business, access is granted through the manager role, and no password or verification code is requested. Official channels are used for matters dependent on Google’s decision, such as removal requests or appeals, and no commitment is made regarding the outcome.

Strengthening the profile at the new address after a move or transfer and reviewing the category and service fields are explained in the Google Business Profile optimization guide. Profile editing is carried out as part of the local SEO service, and its scope is clarified in the preliminary discussion; the monthly fee for the SEO service starts at 9,000 TL.

The next step in preparing the profile for a new phase

Once the closure, break, move, or transfer has been clarified, the next task is to keep the profile live with accurate information. For those who only want information, Google’s help pages are a solid starting point. If you are unsure which option is appropriate instead of closing a Google business, or if the profile needs to be restructured after a move, you can get in touch by WhatsApp or phone for a free preliminary assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Select “Edit profile” and “Business hours” on the profile, use “Edit” to mark “Temporarily closed” or “Permanently closed,” and complete the process with “Save.” For multiple branches, the same procedure is performed through the “Actions” menu in Business Profile Manager.

The profile is removed from the Google Account by selecting “Remove Business Profile” and “Remove profile content and managers” under “Business Profile settings” in the “More” menu. Only the primary owner can do this, and Google states that the business may continue appearing in Search and Maps even after removal.

It does not disappear immediately; according to Google, the profile may continue to appear to people searching for the business, with a clear indication that it is closed. Google’s removal page states that a business marked as closed is gradually removed from Maps over time.

Google recommends this option for closures lasting longer than 7 days, seasonal closures, or closures whose end date is uncertain. Special business hours are set for breaks of 7 days or less.

No; Google asks you not to create a new profile for a relocating business and to update the existing profile with the new address. A business that moves to a new address after verification must be verified again.

Select “Edit profile” on the profile, update the number, and complete the process with “Save”; Google reviews the change before it is published. In addition to the primary number, 2 more mobile or landline numbers can be added, but a fax number cannot be added.

No; according to Google, content and reviews written by users are not removed when the profile is removed from the account. What is permanently deleted is the updates, photos, videos, and replies to reviews added by the business owner.

The new owner is first added to the profile as an owner or manager, then the current primary owner changes their access to “Primary owner” on the “People and access” screen. Only the current primary owner can transfer primary ownership, and a newly added person cannot perform certain procedures during the first 7 days.
