Short answer: Adding a business to Google Maps is free and is done with Google Business Profile. Open business.google.com/add with the Google Account where the profile will be located; enter the business name, category, address or service area, and contact information. Then complete the verification method offered by Google: phone/SMS, email, video call, video, or postcard. Review can take up to 5 business days. If the business already appears on Maps, a new record is not created; ownership is claimed for the existing record.
Adding a business to Google Maps is a registration process that the business owner starts at business.google.com/add using their own Google Account and completes with a verification step. Google’s help page explicitly states that a business can be added to Google for free; there is neither a registration fee nor an annual membership charge for adding a company to Google Maps. The part that requires real attention is not the form, but correctly defining the location, completing verification and keeping information compliant with the rules.
The steps, verification methods and time frames in this guide are taken from Google’s help pages; button names on screen may change over time. Onur Freelance is not an official Google support channel; only Google has the authority to approve verification.

How do you add a business to Google Maps? Registration is created for free using the business owner’s own Google Account and completed through a verification step. First, check whether the business is eligible for a profile. Search Maps for an existing listing, choose the account that will hold the profile, and prepare the name on the sign, full address and telephone number. Sign in to the account that will hold the profile and go to the add-business page. Enter the name, category, location and contact details, then choose one of the verification methods Google offers. Google defines five verification methods: telephone or text message, email, live video call, video recording and postcard. Google decides which will be offered. Do not add a neighborhood or service to the name. Do not create a second profile for the same business. Hide a home address where customers are not received. Do not change the name, address or category while the postcard is on its way. Verification time frames, address changes and official resources are on this page. If you get stuck during registration, you can send a message on WhatsApp. Onur Freelance dot com.
Let’s plan how to set up your initial registration correctly
Registration and verification are completed free of charge through the business owner’s account. If there is uncertainty about the location type, category or verification screen, the current situation is reviewed in a free preliminary assessment; profile setup is addressed within the scope of local SEO work.
What should be checked before adding a business to Google Maps?
Three things should be clarified before registration begins: whether the business is eligible for a Business Profile, whether it already has a listing on Google, and which Google Account will hold the profile. Skipping these checks can result in a second listing being created for the same business.
- Eligibility: Google defines profiles for businesses that make in-person contact with customers during business hours; online-only stores and properties for rent or sale are excluded.
- Existing listing: Search Google Search for the business name and city or the phrase ‘my business,’ and search Maps for the name and city; if an existing listing appears, do not create another.
- Account: A Google Account created with Gmail or another email address can be used; Google recommends linking the company email address to the account if one exists.
- Information: Have the name on the sign, full address and a telephone number controlled by the business ready.
Creating the profile with an employee’s or former agency’s personal account means ownership must be requested back when that relationship ends; official routes for these access problems are explained in the Google Business Profile support guide .
How do you add a business to Google Maps step by step?
A business with no listing on Maps is added through the four-step process described on Google’s page for adding and claiming a business . The process proceeds in this order:
- Visit business.google.com/add while signed in to the Google Account that will hold the profile.
- Click the option to add the business to Google.
- Enter the business name, category, location or service area and contact details according to the questions on screen.
- Select one of the verification options Google offers for that business and follow the on-screen steps.
On the same page, Google specifically emphasizes entering the address correctly and complying with address guidelines. For the category, the most specific option describing the main activity is sufficient; the description, photos and service list are matters for subsequent editing.
If the listing exists on Maps but nobody has claimed it
If an unverified listing has already been created by customers or Google, claim the existing listing rather than creating a new profile. On a computer, open Google Maps, search for the business name and city, follow the ‘Claim this business’ link on the card, choose ‘Manage now’ and proceed to verification. In the mobile application, the same link is in the card’s About tab. If someone else has verified the listing, request access from the current owner instead of claiming it.
An address or a service area? How should the location be entered?
A business that receives customers at its own premises displays its address; a business that visits customers and does not receive customers at its address hides the address and defines a service area. Google calls businesses that both receive customers at their address and provide on-site services hybrid businesses; these can display a service area alongside their address.
The address line is written in its official, full form according to Google’s business representation guidelines . The guidelines and address help page highlight the following points:
- Enter official address details such as the neighborhood, street and building number; floor and unit details can be added.
- Descriptions such as opposite a park or on the corner of two streets are not used instead of an address; a nearby intersection or landmark is added only where the official address does not identify the location.
- A post office box at a post office or a remote location is not accepted as an address.
- A business displaying its address must have a permanent, fixed sign bearing the business name at that address.
- If there is no street number or the system cannot find the address, mark the business location on the map with a pin.
Home-based businesses and virtual offices
Google’s own example is clear on this point: a plumber operating from their residential address removes the address from the profile and displays only the service area. This prevents the home address from becoming public; the verification video can show street signs near the home, a branded vehicle or work equipment. In contrast, a virtual office address rented solely to receive mail, where the business does not actually operate, is not eligible for a profile. An office in a coworking space can also be listed only with visible signage, staff present throughout business hours and the ability to receive customers.
A service area is entered as a maximum of 20 entries using cities, postal codes or similar area names; it cannot be defined by drawing a radius around the business. According to Google, the area’s outer boundary should not exceed approximately a two-hour drive from the business location; Google states that an approved service-area edit can take up to 48 hours to appear on the profile.

What are Google’s business verification methods?
Google defines five verification methods: telephone or text message, email, live video call, video recording and postcard. Google determines which methods are offered, rather than the business owner; according to the verification help page , these options are determined by the business type, region, business hours and publicly available online information, and cannot be changed afterward. Some businesses may be asked to verify through more than one method.
| Method | How does it work? | Point to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Telephone or text message | The code arrives through a call or SMS to the business number on the profile. | Codes are not delivered to automated response systems; a person must be able to answer the call. |
| Follow the steps in the email sent to the address displayed on the verification screen. | You must have access to the address shown on screen. | |
| Live video call | The location and business are shown to a support representative through the camera. | This can only take place during the location’s business hours; it is not offered to every business. |
| Video recording | Record and upload an uninterrupted video through Business Profile using a mobile device. | A previously recorded video is not accepted; the recording must be at least 30 seconds long. |
| Postcard | A five-digit code is sent to the address and entered into the profile. | The code usually arrives within 14 days and expires after 30 days. |
Google recommends video verification for eligible businesses. A storefront business’s video shows location indicators such as a street sign or building number, a sign displaying the name, and an area accessible only to employees, such as the checkout or stockroom. For a service-area business, these are replaced by work equipment, a branded vehicle and an invoice or license bearing the business name; sensitive information and other people’s faces are not recorded.
How long does Google business verification take?
After the verification steps have been completed, Google’s review can take up to five business days, and occasionally longer. Some profiles are verified immediately; Google’s examples include a website verified in Google Search Console and the use of bulk verification for 10 or more locations belonging to the same business. When verification is complete, a confirmation email is sent to the account.
Reviewing a video recording can also take up to five business days. If the video is not accepted, a ‘Review issues’ notification appears on the profile, and a new recording is submitted after addressing the missing elements; if the verification button reappears on the profile, verification has not been completed, and other methods are tried if available.
Some actions taken during the waiting period restart the process. According to Google’s warnings, the following should be avoided:
- Do not edit the business name, address or category while the postcard is on its way; if an edit is made, the arriving code will not work.
- Do not request new codes at short intervals; a new request invalidates the code in the mail and extends the wait.
- Do not share the code with anyone; Google never asks for the verification code and says it should not be given even to people managing the profile.
- Do not create a second profile for the same business because the result is delayed; the rules require one profile per business.
How long does Google Maps take to update?
An edit made to a verified profile first goes through Google’s review; this review usually takes 10 minutes, but can extend to 30 days in some cases. During that time the change appears as ‘Pending,’ then moves to ‘Accepted’ or, if its accuracy could not be confirmed, ‘Not approved.’
When does a newly verified business appear?
Google’s page about finding a business on Google states that only verified businesses can display business information on Maps and Search, and that it can take up to a month for new businesses’ rankings to appear in search results. According to the same page, search results can take up to three days to update after information is edited. How the profile appears to others can be checked in Chrome’s or Maps’ incognito mode.
Appearing on the map does not mean ranking at the top; Google ranks local results according to relevance, distance and prominence. How to address areas such as categories, photos and reviews is covered separately in the Google Business Profile optimization guide .
Changes suggested by Maps users
Any Maps user can suggest an edit to a place’s name, hours, telephone number or address. Google reviews suggestions before publishing them, states that a change may take some time to appear on the map, and may reject suggestions that fundamentally change a business. Google can also update the profile itself using reports from different sources; in this case, the profile owner receives a notification.
If verification is stuck, let’s review the listing together
When facing a rejected video, a code that has not arrived or an edit that was not approved, the first step is to check that the address, name and location type comply with Google’s rules. The listing is reviewed together, and missing elements are corrected through the business owner’s account. Onur Freelance cannot approve verification on Google’s behalf; the decision belongs solely to Google.
How do you change an address on Google Maps?
A business that moves updates the address on its existing profile rather than creating a new one. Google’s page about duplicate profiles explicitly requires this; the profile-editing page also states that a business moving to a new address after verification must be verified again. The steps are as follows:
- Sign in with the Google Account linked to the profile and open Business Profile.
- Select Edit profile, followed by Location.
- Enter the new full address using the edit option on the ‘Business location’ line.
- If the address cannot be found, reenter the sections highlighted in red; if it still cannot be found, use Adjust to move the pin to the correct point.
- Save and complete the reverification steps Google requests.
The same process can also be completed on mobile through the Business tab at the bottom right of the Google Maps application. Address edits are reviewed like other changes; Google states that a new address usually takes 10 minutes to appear, but sometimes takes 30 days.
Name changes, closure and reopening
If the business name changes after verification, reverification may be required. Google considers minor changes where proper names, services described in the name and the category remain the same to be rebranding on the existing profile; otherwise, the business is considered new, the old profile is marked permanently closed and a new profile is created under the new name. For closures longer than seven days, seasonal closures or closures of indefinite duration, use ‘Temporarily closed’; for closures of seven days or less, use special hours.
Adding an address for people who do not own the business
Adding an address is not always related to a business; the address of a newly constructed building or a home missing from the map can also be added to Google Maps. On a computer, search for the address and submit the correct information using the edit suggestion option indicating that the pin location or address is wrong; for an address entirely absent from the map, use the map-editing section in the menu. These corrections are publicly visible. A missing business that you do not own is suggested through the option to add a missing place; this suggestion does not replace the owner’s own profile registration.
Duplicate listings, adding words to names and other common mistakes
Most mistakes made when adding a business to Google Maps arise from a desire to make the business more visible and have the opposite effect. According to Google’s guidelines, incorrect entries and their correct alternatives are matched as follows:
| Incorrect entry | Correct method |
|---|---|
| Adding a neighborhood, service name or terms such as ’24/7′ to the name field | Enter the real name shown on the sign and invoice; in Google’s example, the name is entered as ‘Selin Kafe,’ while the information that it is open 24 hours is entered in business hours. |
| Creating a second profile for the same business | Keep one profile per business; profiles considered duplicates are not displayed in Search and Maps. |
| Creating a separate profile for each service | List different services in the services section of a single profile. |
| Leaving a home address visible where customers are not received | Hide the address and show only the service area. |
| Entering a call center, forwarding or premium-rate number | Use a number directly controlled by the business, preferably a local one. |
| Using categories as keywords | Choose as few categories as possible, keeping them specific and descriptive of the main business activity. |
If a second listing was created by mistake, the duplicate can be removed without affecting the verified original profile. Google reminds users that removing a profile also deletes its content and associated managers; the listing to remove must therefore be chosen carefully. If one business appears on Maps with two separate cards, a merge is requested through a suggested edit on Maps, and these requests are subject to review.
Suspension risk: why does a profile become invisible?
A profile found to violate the rules is suspended or disabled and is not shown to other users on Google until the problem is resolved. Google communicates this through a notification sent to the Google Account used to manage the profile. The guidelines page also states that adding unnecessary information to the business name can, by itself, lead to suspension.
The name, address and category selected during initial registration should therefore be treated as statements to be verified, rather than drafts to correct later. An appeal for a suspended profile is submitted through Google’s appeals tool after bringing the profile into compliance, and no new profile is created for the same business while the review is in progress. Documents to prepare as evidence and the steps in the appeals tool are explained in detail in the support guide .
Setting it up yourself or getting professional support?
For a business with one location, signage and customers visiting its address, adding the business to Google Maps and completing verification is work the owner can complete independently. Getting support becomes useful when decisions conflict with Google’s rules or the profile will be planned together with the website and local search work:
- When decisions about hiding an address and defining a service area are needed for a home-based business
- When video or postcard verification repeatedly fails to produce a result
- When reverification is required after a move or name change
- When the profile will be considered together with website contact information and review management
At Onur Freelance, profile setup and editing are carried out as part of the local SEO service . Monthly SEO work starts at 9,000 TL, the scope is clarified in a preliminary meeting, and details are provided on the SEO prices page. Because Google is not paid for the profile, the distinction between the free part and the service fee is explained in the article is Google Business Profile paid? .
During setup, the profile is created in the business owner’s Google Account; the supporting party is subsequently added as a manager using their own account. Sharing passwords and forwarding verification codes are not part of this arrangement. Onur Freelance is not an official Google support channel and does not guarantee verification approval or any particular position on Maps.
Let’s take your first step on Maps together
For a business owner gathering information, these steps and Google’s help pages are sufficient to complete registration independently. When there is uncertainty about the location type or verification, the listing is reviewed together in a free preliminary assessment. If the profile is live, a review link to send to customers can be prepared with the Google review link generator ; you can contact us through WhatsApp or telephone for setup and editing requests.
If someone else previously created the listing, follow the steps for requesting Google business ownership instead of creating a new profile; details are provided in a separate article.
If the business closes or moves to another address after the listing has been created, the steps for closure and relocation are explained in a separate guide.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a charge to add a company to Google Maps?
No; Google states that a business can be added as a Business Profile free of charge and that claiming an unverified listing is also free. Payment arises only if the business chooses to advertise or outsource profile management.
Are a Google Maps listing and a Google Business Profile the same thing?
Yes. The business listing on Maps is the Google Business Profile. The process searched for as “Maps listing,” “adding a business,” or “map listing” is opening and verifying this profile. The profile appears both on Google Maps and in the business listing in Google Search.
How long does Google business verification take?
According to Google, the review after completing the steps can take up to five business days and occasionally longer. With the postcard method, the code usually arrives within 14 days; some businesses with websites verified in Search Console may be verified immediately.
How long does Google Maps take to update?
Profile edits are usually reviewed in 10 minutes, but in some cases this can take up to 30 days. Google states that search results can take up to three days to update after information is edited, while a new business’s ranking can take up to a month to appear.
Can a business be added to Google Maps using a home address?
Yes; a business that visits customers and does not receive customers at home can create a profile, but must hide its home address and display only its service area. Google gives the example of a plumber operating from a residential address for this situation.
Should a new Google Maps profile be created when a business moves?
No; Google asks businesses that move to update the address on the existing profile rather than create a new one. A business moving to a new address after verification must be verified again.
What should you do if the verification code does not arrive?
According to Google, a postcard code usually takes up to 14 days to arrive; do not change the name, address or category or request a new code during this period, because a new request invalidates the existing code. Try other verification options if they appear on the profile; if none works, contact the Google Business Profile support team.
What happens if a second listing is created for the same business?
Google requires one profile per business and does not display profiles it considers duplicates in Search and Maps. Removing a duplicate listing created by mistake does not affect the verified original profile, but the removed listing’s content is also deleted.
Can Onur Freelance create a Google Business Profile listing?
The profile is created in the business owner’s own Google Account; Onur Freelance carries out setup and editing as part of local SEO, with monthly fees starting at 9,000 TL. Onur Freelance is not an official Google support channel and does not guarantee verification results or rankings.
