Short answer: A business owner cannot directly delete a Google review; only the person who wrote the review can delete it. What can be done from the Business Profile is to report the review that violates Google policies. Examples of violations are fake engagement, conflict of interest, harassment, off-topic content, and advertising. Google reviews the report, and if it finds a violation, it removes the review. A low rating alone is not considered a violation. The status of the report is tracked from the Review Management tool; a rejection decision can be appealed.
The most common misconception about removing Google business reviews is this: a business owner cannot personally delete a customer review from their profile. According to Google’s help pages, the available action is to report a review that violates policies and request its removal; Google makes the decision. Different routes are available in Google’s review removal process for fake, abusive or off-topic reviews. Why a business’s own received reviews disappear is also often related to the same policy checks.
This article explains which reviews can be removed, reporting and appeal steps, legal removal requests, reasons reviews are not visible and principles for responding to negative reviews, based on Google’s Turkish help pages. Onur Freelance is not an official Google support channel and does not provide a review deletion service; only Google decides whether a review remains published.

Can a Google business review be deleted? The business owner cannot delete the review themselves; they can report a review that violates policies, and Google decides on removal. The removal criterion is the Maps content policy: fake engagement, conflicts of interest, harassment, hate speech, off-topic content and promotion. A low rating alone is not a violation. Sign in with the account managing the profile and open Read reviews. Select Report beside the review, choose the violation type and submit the report. Track the result through the Reviews Management Tool. Three statuses appear in the Reviews Management Tool. If no violation is found, there is a one-time right to appeal; select up to 10 reviews in one appeal and state the reason concretely. Do not accuse the reviewer in your response or report the same review repeatedly. Do not ask employees for reviews. Do not pay people demanding money in exchange for deletion; use Google’s extortion form. Principles for responding to negative reviews and official resources are on this page. If you get stuck organizing reviews, you can send a message on WhatsApp. Onur Freelance dot com.
Let’s strengthen the profile and review process instead of focusing on deletion
An unfair review is reported through the business owner’s own account, and Google determines the outcome. If a review of profile information, response wording and the process for requesting policy-compliant reviews from genuine customers is desired, the current situation is examined in a free preliminary assessment.
Can Google business reviews be deleted? The business owner’s authority
No; a Business Profile manager has no button that directly deletes a review. Google’s reporting inappropriate reviews page states that when a review violating Google policies is encountered on the profile, it can be reported with a request for removal. A report is a request; the review is removed if Google’s assessment finds a policy violation.
The area the business owner directly controls is their response to the review. The response can be edited or deleted, but the customer’s text stays in place. The other person who can completely delete the review is its author. Authority is distributed as follows:
- Business owner: Can report the review, write a response and edit or delete their own response.
- Reviewer: Can edit or delete their own review through the contributions menu in Google Maps; an edited review displays its last edit date as the publication date.
- Google: Reviews the report according to its policies and decides whether to remove the review or leave it published.
A low rating alone is not a violation. A negative review based on a genuine experience and containing no profanity, harassment or personal information remains published if it does not violate policy, even if the business considers it unfair.
Which reviews does Google remove? Prohibited and restricted content
The removal criterion is Google Maps’ prohibited and restricted content policy; whether a review merits reporting can be understood by consulting this list. The policy’s basic principle is that contributions to Maps should reflect genuine experiences at a place or business. Most complaints about fake Google business reviews fall under this principle, namely fake engagement.
The policy topics most commonly encountered in business reviews are:
- Fake engagement: Reviews and ratings that do not reflect genuine experiences or are written in exchange for direct or in-kind payment.
- Conflict of interest: Reviews from people with current or former employment relationships, contractual or consulting relationships, or similar professional or personal connections.
- Harassment and hate speech: Reviews intended to harass people or businesses, or containing threats or discrimination.
- Off-topic content: General political or social commentary and personal rants unrelated to the experience at that location.
- Advertising and promotion: Text containing links, contact information or commercial promotion directing people elsewhere.
- Impersonation, obscenity and violence: Other categories of prohibited content in the policy.
- Meaningless and repetitive content: Unintelligible character sequences or repeated submissions of the same text.
The view that ‘the review is unfair’ or ‘the customer misunderstood the situation’ is not listed as a removal reason in the policy. A review believed to come from a competitor can be reported on grounds of fake engagement or a conflict of interest; Google still makes the assessment.
Reporting fake reviews: step by step through Business Profile
Reporting a fake review is completed through a few screens using the Google Account managing the profile. The sequence described on Google’s reporting page is:
- Sign in to Business Profile with the account managing it.
- Open ‘Read reviews.’
- Select ‘Report’ beside the review you want removed.
- Choose the violation type, such as ‘Spam’ or ‘Profanity.’
- Submit the report.
The same process can also be carried out with Google’s Reviews Management Tool: after signing in and confirming the email address, select the business and mark the relevant review through ‘Report a new review for removal.’ Google states that reviewing reports usually takes a few days. Before reporting, retaining a screenshot, the review’s date and any related customer record within the business makes subsequent appeals or legal steps easier.

Tracking status and appealing with the Reviews Management Tool
The outcome of a reported review is tracked through the Reviews Management Tool; it shows report statuses and opens the appeal route for rejected reports. According to Google’s reporting page, the following three statuses appear in the tool:
| Status | Meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Decision pending | The review has been flagged but not yet assessed | Wait for the review |
| Report reviewed – No policy violation | The review has been checked and no violation found | Appeal if there are strong grounds |
| Escalated | The appeal has been referred to a higher level | Monitor email for updates |
For reviews where no policy violation is found, Google allows a one-time appeal, with a maximum of 10 reviews selectable in one appeal. Because the opportunity is one-time, state briefly and concretely which policy category the review violates and why. What wastes the most time in the Google business review removal process is using this right on a general statement such as ‘the review is unfair.’
The tool belongs to Google and is used with the profile owner’s account. The process Google describes contains no privileged channel through which an intermediary can obtain removal through a ‘special connection.’
Legal removal requests for insults and violations of personal rights
If the review contains material considered unlawful beyond a policy violation, for example targeting a business’s or employee’s reputation with a false accusation, Google’s legal removal channel can also be used. Google’s removing content for legal reasons page explains that content violating laws or rights can be reported, and Google reviews the material and decides whether to block, restrict or remove it. The same page recommends flagging the content within the relevant product before making a formal request.
The request is made through Google’s content reporting form . The form includes Google Maps and local business listings as a separate product; a defamation option is provided for reporting false statements that harm a person’s or business’s reputation. Useful materials to prepare before requesting include:
- The direct review link and a dated screenshot
- A short explanation of which statement in the review is considered false or unlawful and why
- Any related court decision or official correspondence
- Information showing the requester’s relationship to the business
Google also states that it sends copies of legal notices to the Lumen database. Because assessing insults and personal rights is a legal matter, consulting a lawyer before submitting a request is recommended; this article does not replace a legal opinion.
Negative review extortion: demands for money in exchange for deletion
A rapid succession of one- or two-star reviews followed by demands for money or services to remove them is a form of fraud specifically identified by Google. Google’s negative review extortion page describes these attempts as serious policy violations and advises against communicating with attackers or making payment. According to Google, paying can trigger further attacks and does not mean the problem will be resolved.
Reports are submitted using Google’s extortion form, which requests the business name, address and affected profile’s link. Evidence includes screenshots showing message dates, times and senders, links to suspicious reviews, relevant usernames, email addresses or telephone numbers, and when the increase in reviews was noticed. Warnings about callers claiming to represent Google and demanding payment, together with official contact channels, are also collected on the Google Business Profile support page .
The same caution applies to intermediaries trying to take on Google business review removal for a fee by saying ‘we will handle it.’ The reporting and appeal steps Google describes contain no payment step; the fact that the profile itself is also free is explained in the article is Google Business Profile paid? .
Why are Google business reviews deleted or not visible?
When someone reports that Google business reviews are not appearing, the first possibility is that the review is awaiting a policy check. Google’s missing or delayed reviews page states that reviews are checked for policy compliance and this can take a few days. According to the same page, reviews removed for policy violations are not restored.
The situations mentioned on Google’s pages in answer to why Google business reviews are deleted can be listed as follows:
- Spam and fake engagement: Reviews judged not to reflect genuine experiences or containing inappropriate content are removed.
- Conflict of interest: Reviews from people with professional or personal ties to the business, such as employees, business partners or consultants, violate policy.
- Incentivized reviews: Reviews requested in exchange for discounts, gifts or free services count as fake engagement.
- Profile merging: Reviews from merged profiles may take a few days to appear.
- Application version: People using old software may be unable to submit reviews; updating Google Maps is recommended.
- School exception: Reviews and ratings are disabled for institutions educating students aged 6–18; institutions such as universities and daycare centers are outside this policy.
Asking employees, family members or business partners for reviews can cause those reviews to be removed under the conflict-of-interest rule. Google’s page also provides a link to contact support about missing reviews.
Buying and incentivizing reviews: risks under Google policies and legislation
Buying reviews or asking for reviews in exchange for gifts violates both Google policy and advertising legislation in Turkey. Google’s getting more reviews page prohibits requesting reviews in exchange for incentives such as free or discounted products or services as fake engagement. The review request link page adds that this rule also covers incentives intended to get reviews published, changed or negative reviews removed.
Google’s enforcement can extend to the entire profile. According to Google’s fake engagement restrictions page, a violating profile may be unable to receive new reviews and ratings for a period, its existing reviews may be temporarily hidden, and a notice stating that fake reviews were removed may appear on the profile. Google notifies the business owner by email before imposing a restriction and provides an opportunity to appeal.
What does the Regulation on Commercial Advertising and Unfair Commercial Practices say?
The Ministry of Trade’s Regulation on Commercial Advertising and Unfair Commercial Practices defines consumer evaluations to include comments as well as ratings such as scores or stars. Under paragraph 8 of Article 28/B, no agreement may be made with a natural or legal person, and no service may be purchased, to produce untrue evaluations intended to increase sales of goods or services. Buying a paid review package corresponds to the conduct described by this provision; consulting a lawyer is recommended for a legal assessment of a specific situation.
Let’s establish a compliant review process with genuine customers
Purchased reviews or reviews requested in exchange for gifts put both the profile and the business at risk. Incorporating the review request into the service process, using the link and QR code in the right places and establishing response wording are addressed in a free preliminary assessment; the scope of the work is clarified in the preliminary meeting.
Responding to negative reviews: professional response principles
The business’s public response is the strongest tool for balancing the impact of a negative review that cannot be removed. According to Google’s managing customer reviews page, a response is written through ‘Reply’ beside the relevant review under ‘Read reviews.’ Google reviews responses; this usually takes up to 10 minutes but can extend to 30 days in some cases, and an approved response is published publicly as the business’s reply.
Google’s response tips recommend brief and simple, polite and professional, personal and timely replies, and advise against offering a sales pitch to someone who is already a customer. A response framework adapting these principles to negative reviews can be structured as follows:
- Thanks and acknowledgment: Thank the customer for the feedback and acknowledge the problem without becoming defensive.
- Short explanation: If needed, explain what happened in one sentence; do not include the customer’s personal information, order details or health information.
- Route to resolution: Direct the customer to a telephone number or email address so the matter can be resolved privately.
- Signature: Close the response with the responsible person’s name or initials.
Even when a review is believed to be fake, the response remains calm: politely state that no record of such a service could be found and invite the person to get in touch. Writing a response and reporting a review are independent actions; both can be carried out together.
Focusing on deleting reviews or establishing a review process?
In common practice, all energy goes into removing an unfair review when it arrives; yet removal options are limited for a review without a policy violation. A more productive approach is to report it according to the rules and direct energy toward a flow of genuine reviews, professional responses and current profile information. The difference between Google business review removal and establishing a review process is shown side by side below:
| Criterion | Deletion-focused approach | Review-process-focused approach |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Google makes the decision; the outcome is uncertain | Requests, responses and profile information are in the business’s hands |
| Time | Review taking days and one opportunity to appeal | A short step repeated after each service delivery |
| Risk | Being drawn into a paid ‘deletion’ promise | Unincentivized, policy-compliant requests |
| Scope | Limited to a single review | The profile’s overall picture is updated with genuine experiences |
At Onur Freelance, working with local businesses from Maltepe since 2019, we base our profile work on this second approach. Reviews are reported through the business owner’s own account; together, we assess which policy category a review may fall under and establish response wording and the review request process. Profile editing is carried out as part of the local SEO service ; monthly SEO fees start at 9,000 TL, and the scope is clarified in the preliminary meeting.
We do not promise review deletion: Google decides whether a review will be removed, and no service provider can commit to this outcome in advance. For profile fields such as category, description and service area, the Google Business Profile optimization guide can also be consulted.
Common review mistakes and the correct approach
Problems leading to Google business review removal requests often grow because of small mistakes made before the removal request. Common mistakes and their correct alternatives are:
- Accusing the reviewer in a public response: A response turning into an argument is visible to everyone viewing the profile; write a calm, brief reply and move the details to a private channel.
- Reporting the same review repeatedly: Report once using the correct violation type and track the result in the Reviews Management Tool.
- Using the appeal without stating grounds: Clearly state which policy category the review violates in the one-time appeal.
- Asking employees and relatives for reviews: These reviews may be removed under the conflict-of-interest rule; request reviews only from genuine customers.
- Requesting a review or review change in exchange for a discount: Incentivized reviews count as fake engagement; offer customers nothing in return for a review.
- Paying someone who says ‘we will remove the review’: Because Google makes the decision, such a promise has no basis; use Google’s form if extortion is suspected.
The correct method for requesting reviews is simple: send the customer Google’s review link or QR code when the service is complete. Google states that the link can be obtained through ‘Get more reviews’ under ‘Read reviews’ and used on receipts, in emails and in the store. To prepare the link quickly, the Google review link generator can also be used.
The next step for profile organization and review flow
If you read about Google business review removal for information, the first step is to perform reporting and response actions through the profile owner’s own account as Google describes. When unsure whether a review can be removed, compare it with each policy category individually. If the profile has not yet been created, you can begin with the steps for adding a business to Google Maps ; if you would like review requests, response wording and profile information to be addressed together, contact us through WhatsApp or telephone for a free preliminary assessment.
An owner or manager role on the profile is required to respond to reviews; if someone else holds access, you can follow the Google Business Profile ownership request guide.

Frequently asked questions
Can a business owner delete a Google review themselves?
No; a business owner cannot directly delete a customer review, but can request removal by reporting a review that violates Google’s policies. The only person who can completely delete the review themselves is its author; Google makes the removal decision.
Can Google reviews be turned off?
There is no setting in the Business Profile that turns off reviews; reviews are part of the profile. According to Google’s page, reviews and ratings are disabled in schools that provide education to students between the ages of 6 and 18. This is not a setting the business can choose, but Google’s policy specific to this category.
Which reviews does Google remove?
Google removes reviews that violate the Maps content policy. Categories include fake engagement, conflicts of interest, harassment and hate speech, off-topic content, advertising and promotion, impersonation, and meaningless repetitive content.
How long does it take to get a result for a reported review?
Google states that assessing reviews usually takes a few days. The report status appears in the Reviews Management Tool as ‘Decision pending,’ ‘Report reviewed – No policy violation’ or ‘Escalated.’
Can you appeal if a review report is rejected?
Yes; for reviews where no policy violation is found, Google allows a one-time appeal, with up to 10 reviews selectable in one appeal. Once the appeal is escalated, updates are tracked by email.
Why are Google business reviews not appearing?
Reviews undergo policy checks before publication, which can take a few days. Reviews removed for policy violations are not restored; profile merging and an old application version can also cause reviews to be delayed or prevent submission.
Is there a legal route for an insulting Google review?
Yes; Google’s legal content reporting form includes a defamation option for Google Maps and local business listings. Google recommends flagging the review within the product before a formal request; consulting a lawyer is recommended for a legal assessment.
Is buying Google reviews legal?
Google prohibits paid or incentivized reviews as fake engagement and may impose restrictions such as preventing new reviews on the profile. Article 28/B of the Regulation on Commercial Advertising and Unfair Commercial Practices also prohibits agreements and purchasing services to produce untrue evaluations to increase sales.
