Most Google Business Profile verification problems arise from not fully meeting the requirements of the method Google offers or from the business not complying with profile rules. Business owners cannot choose the verification method; Google offers suitable options from video recording, live video calls, phone, SMS, email, or postcard according to the business type, region, and publicly available information.
This article explains where each method gets stuck, how to resubmit a rejected video, what to do and avoid when a postcard code does not arrive, duplicate profile and ownership conflicts, reasons for suspension, and the appeals process according to current Google Business Profile Help Center documents. Optimization after verification is the subject of a separate guide.
Why is Google Business Profile verification necessary?
Verification is mandatory for editing business information, responding to reviews, and officially taking ownership of the profile. Google’s business verification pagestates that the verified person owns the profile and is responsible for the accuracy of its information.
An unverified profile may continue to appear on Maps, but information such as opening hours, phone number, or address may change through user suggestions, and the business cannot control those changes. A Google Account is enough to get started; a company email address can also be linked to a Google Account and used. Keeping ownership in the business’s own account instead of an agency’s or employee’s account prevents future ownership problems. When outside assistance is used, the agency or consultant is added as a manager after verification; primary ownership remains with the business.
What are the current verification methods?
Current methods are video recording, live video call, phone or SMS, email, and postcard; Google decides which appear, and some businesses may need verification through multiple methods. Google recommends video verification when the business is eligible.
| Method | How does it work? | Most common sticking point |
|---|---|---|
| Video recording | An uninterrupted video recorded live through the profile on a mobile device is uploaded | Missing signage, location, or evidence of being a manager |
| Live video call | A video call with a support representative takes place during opening hours | Attempting the call away from the business or outside working hours |
| Phone or SMS | A code arrives by call or text at the number on the profile | The number is connected to an automated switchboard |
| Instructions are sent to the address shown on the verification screen | No access to the address shown | |
| Postcard | Mail containing a 5-digit code is sent to the business address | Changing profile details or requesting another code while waiting |
For businesses whose website is already verified in Search Console, Google may verify the profile instantly. Having a website on the business’s own domain added to Search Console facilitates verification; the website’s other roles in local visibility are discussed in the importance of a corporate website article.
Video recording verification: Requirements for acceptance
For video verification to be accepted, the same video must show the location, the existence of the business, and that the person recording manages the business. Google’s video recording verification pagerequires a single unedited, uninterrupted recording of at least 30 seconds, recorded and uploaded through Business Profile on a mobile device; a previously recorded video cannot be uploaded.
The footage expected from storefront businesses and service-area businesses differs:
- Location: For storefront businesses, show the street sign, building number, and neighboring businesses; for service-area businesses, show signs and recognized landmarks around the business address.
- Existence of the business: For storefront businesses, show permanent signage or a storefront with the same name as the profile; for service-area businesses, show a branded vehicle, equipment, workspace, or business card.
- Proof of management: Record an action only a business employee could perform, such as opening a cash register, entering storage or a kitchen, using the sales system, or unlocking a branded vehicle.
- What should not appear in the video: Sensitive information such as bank account, tax, or identity numbers, private information, and other people’s faces.
Review may take up to 5 business days. When a video is rejected, a notification on the profile asks for the issues to be reviewed; Google shares the rejection reason and requests a new recording supplying the missing information. The new video must contain both what was shown in the first recording and the missing evidence.

Sticking points in phone, SMS, and email verification
Although phone and SMS give the fastest results among Google Business Profile verification options, they also frequently get stuck when the phone line setup is unsuitable. For phone verification, the code is sent to the business number on the profile through a live call or text and is not shared with interactive voice response systems. If the number connects to a call center, automated greeting menu, or forwarding service, the code may never arrive. During verification, ensure the call reaches a line that can be answered directly.
With email verification, Google displays a specific address on the verification screen, and instructions go only to that address. If the address belongs to a former employee or the company that built the website, this option will not work; try another method or first restore access to that address. A live video call can only take place during the location’s opening hours, and similar evidence to the video method is expected during the call.
Postcard verification: What if the code does not arrive?
The postcard method is not offered to every business; when offered, the code generally arrives within 14 days and expires after 30 days. A small mistake during the waiting period can invalidate the code sent and restart the process. The correct sequence is:
- Before requesting the code, check that the mailing address on the profile is complete and suitable for delivery.
- After requesting the code, do not edit the business name, address, or category; otherwise, the code sent will not work.
- Even if the code is delayed, do not request another one, because a new request invalidates the code in the mail.
- When the postcard arrives, enter the 5-digit code in the profile’s “Code” field and submit it.
- If the time limit expires without the code arriving, try the other methods offered on the profile; if unsuccessful, contact support.
Google emphasizes that it never requests verification codes by phone or message and that codes must not be shared with anyone, including those managing the profile. Calls claiming to be Google representatives and requesting the code should be treated as attempted fraud.
Let us resolve your stalled verification together
Let us examine the methods shown on the profile and the rejection reason together and develop a plan that follows the rules. The preliminary assessment is free; if support is needed, we share the scope and cost on the same day before work begins.
How long does verification review take, and why does the verification button return?
After verification steps are completed, Google’s review can take up to 5 business days, and occasionally longer; the result is communicated by confirmation email. Repeatedly entering new information on the profile or creating a second profile for the same business during this time complicates the review.
A button asking for verification reappearing on the profile means Google could not fully verify the business; if multiple methods are offered, try the others. Additional information requested for a previously verified profile usually follows recent changes to core information such as the business name, address, or category. Google then requires reverification to confirm the change, and the process is repeated using the same methods.
Which businesses are ineligible for verification?
Some verification problems involve eligibility rather than the method: businesses without face-to-face customer contact or a real operating location cannot be verified regardless of the method attempted. Google’s Business Profile guidelines and video verification document clearly define these boundaries.
The main ineligible situations under the guidelines are:
- Online sales only: E-commerce stores operating through a virtual storefront without face-to-face service.
- Virtual office: Addresses rented only for mail where the business does not actually operate.
- Post office box: Post office box addresses at a post office or remote location.
- An address without signage: Businesses that show their address but have no permanent sign bearing the business name there.
Businesses such as plumbers, locksmiths, or consultants working from home without serving customers at their own address register as service-area businesses and hide their addresses from customers. Guidelines require service-area boundaries not to exceed approximately a 2-hour drive from the business location. Registering a business without a store as a storefront is a frequent rejection reason because signage cannot be shown in video verification. When correcting such a listing, hide the address, define the districts or cities served, and restart verification according to the new setup.
How are duplicate profiles and ownership problems resolved?
Each business may have only one profile; a second profile for the same business is considered a duplicate and is not shown on Search or Maps. If a warning that “this profile already belongs to someone else” appears during verification, an employee, former partner, or agency may have verified it previously.
In that case, send an access request to the current owner through the profile. Google’s duplicate profile page says the owner should respond within three days; a denial can be appealed, and if there is no response, a profile claim option may become available. Relocating businesses update the existing profile rather than creating a second profile for the new address; businesses offering multiple services also list them on one profile rather than creating separate profiles for each.
Google Business Profile suspended: Why does it happen?
Profiles can be suspended or disabled when they do not comply with Business Profile guidelines; suspension often occurs during verification or after changes to core information. The main risky practices defined in the guidelines are:
- Adding keywords to the business name: The profile name must reflect the actual name used on signage and documents.
- Using an ineligible address: A virtual office, post office box, or address where the business does not actually operate.
- Creating multiple profiles for the same business: Duplicate profiles for different services or districts.
- Using categories like keywords: Choosing categories describing features the business has rather than what the business is.
- Collecting fake or incentivized reviews: Google may impose restrictions such as stopping new reviews, hiding existing reviews, or displaying a warning on the profile.
Structuring the profile entirely within the guidelines reduces suspension risk from the outset. The details of choosing the name, category, and service area are explained in the Google Business Profile optimization guide.
How do you appeal and request another review step by step?
For a suspended profile, first bring the profile into compliance with all guidelines, then submit an appeal through the Google Business Profile appeals tool. Google’s fixing suspended profiles page describes the process as follows:
- Correct the information causing the violation; make the name, address, and category reflect the actual situation.
- Prepare supporting documents: official business registration, business license, tax certificate, or electricity, water, telephone, or internet bills.
- Check that the business name and address on the documents exactly match the profile.
- Sign in to the appeals tool using the Google Account linked to the profile, select the profile, and read the violation reason.
- Submit the appeal; upload documents within 60 minutes after opening the evidence form.
- The decision is communicated by email; status can also be tracked through the appeals tool.
Do not create a new profile for the same business while review is underway. If denied, an additional review can be requested with new evidence absent from the first appeal. For an account-level restriction, first appeal the account restriction, then submit a separate appeal for the profile suspension.
Mistakes that complicate verification and the correct approach
Most mistakes in Google Business Profile verification are hasty steps intended to speed up results. Requesting another code, recording video from home or away from the business, repeatedly editing information, or deleting a rejected profile and creating a new one prolongs the process. The correct approach is to meet all requirements of the offered method fully from the outset and wait for one step’s result before moving to another.
Writing the name, address, and phone number exactly as on the website, invoices, and signage also facilitates verification; no inconsistencies remain in video or document review. Showing this information on a clear website contact page in the same format as the profile is a fundamental part of the SEO-friendly web design process. Addressing overall visibility in local searches, local SEO services aim to establish this consistency across the profile, website, and directory listings together.

Frequently asked questions
Can the business owner choose the verification method?
No, verification methods are determined automatically by Google and cannot be changed. If multiple options appear on the profile, you can choose between those options.
How many seconds should the verification video be?
The video must be a single unedited, uninterrupted recording at least 30 seconds long. It is recorded live through Business Profile on a mobile device; a previously recorded video cannot be uploaded.
Should I request another code if the postcard code does not arrive?
No, requesting another code invalidates the code in the mail and prolongs the process. The code usually arrives within 14 days; if it has not arrived by the end of its 30-day validity, try other methods.
How long does verification review take?
Google states that verification reviews may take up to 5 business days, and occasionally longer. Some businesses whose websites are verified in Search Console may be verified instantly.
Can a home-based business create a Google Business Profile?
If it does not serve customers at its own address, it can register as a service-area business and hide its home address. The verification video shows the business address surroundings, equipment used, and business documents.
Which documents are used to appeal a suspended profile?
Official business registration, a business license, a tax certificate, and electricity, water, telephone, or internet bills can be added as evidence. The business name and address on the documents must match the profile.
My profile is verified in someone else's account. What should I do?
Send an access request to the current owner through the profile and wait for the owner to respond within three days. If no response arrives, a claim option may become available; if denied, the decision can be appealed.
