Short answer: Google Ads is not a subscription; charges are only incurred while ads are running. To stop payment completely, the account is canceled from Admin > Account settings > Account status. Ads usually stop within 24 hours, and spending up to that point is reflected on the final invoice.
There is no single answer to how to close Google Ads; stopping advertisements for a few weeks and completely canceling the account are two separate actions in Google Ads. If the differences between pausing a campaign, removing a campaign and canceling an account are not understood before deciding to close a Google Ads account, advertisements may unexpectedly resume or a remaining prepaid balance may be forgotten in the account. The three matters businesses most want to understand also arise from this distinction: what happens to remaining money, when the final charge is taken and whether the account can be reopened later.
This article covers the steps in Google’s Turkish help pages in sequence, including menu names; it also separately explains how the account stays with the business when agency work ends. No step that could not be verified on Google’s help pages was included in this guide.

How do you close a Google Ads account? Stopping advertisements and canceling the account are separate actions; the whole account is canceled through Account status in Account settings. Closing takes place at three levels. A paused campaign can be restarted, while a removed campaign cannot be restored. When an account is canceled, advertisements stop within 24 hours and a balance refund begins. Go to Account settings in the Admin menu, expand Account status and select Cancel my account. Only a user with Admin access sees this option. Cancellation does not erase past spending; an unpaid balance is collected within 31 days. The remaining balance returns to the original payment method, and the process usually takes four to 12 weeks. Pausing does not erase accrued amounts. The agency’s manager account is removed separately. When an account canceled with active campaigns is reactivated, those campaigns automatically resume serving. Reactivation, removing the agency link and official resources are on this page. If you get stuck with the account, you can send a message on WhatsApp. Onur Freelance dot com.
Let’s review the account’s status together before stopping advertising
Whether to pause or cancel often becomes clear from the account balance, linked manager accounts and payment setting. The account’s current situation is examined in a free preliminary assessment; which step involves less loss for the business is explained clearly.
How do you close Google Ads? Differences between pausing, removing and canceling
In Google Ads, ‘closing’ occurs at three different levels: pausing a campaign, removing a campaign or canceling the entire account. According to Google’s enabling, pausing or removing campaigns page, advertisements in a paused or removed campaign are no longer shown. The difference appears in whether reversal is possible and in the account’s billing.
| Action | What happens? | Can it be reversed? |
|---|---|---|
| Pausing a campaign | Advertisements are not shown; the account and payment settings stay open | Yes, the campaign is reenabled |
| Removing a campaign | The campaign stops permanently; performance data can still be viewed | No; create a new campaign or copy the settings |
| Canceling the account | All advertisements stop within 24 hours; a refund starts for refundable balances | Usually yes; the account is reactivated |
For a seasonal business, pausing is often sufficient; account history, conversion settings and campaign structure remain intact. Account cancellation becomes relevant if advertising activity is ending entirely or there is a prepaid balance to refund. On its cancellation page, Google also states that campaigns can be paused instead of canceling if no balance remains in the account. This distinction is the first decision in answering how to close Google Ads.
Steps for pausing and removing Google Ads campaigns
A Google Ads campaign is paused in a few clicks through the Campaigns screen inside the account. Google’s prescribed sequence is:
- Click the Campaigns icon in the Google Ads account.
- Open the Campaigns dropdown in the section menu and select Campaigns.
- Click the colored status icon beside the campaign name.
- Select Pause to stop temporarily or Remove to end it permanently.
To stop several campaigns at once, check the boxes beside them and use the same options in the Edit menu. Google explicitly states that a removed campaign cannot be resumed or restored. Therefore, pausing rather than removing is the safer choice whenever returning is a possibility.
What happens when a paused campaign is restarted?
When the campaign is reenabled, ad groups and keywords previously paused separately do not start automatically. Google states that every paused item must be resumed individually. Checking the budget, bidding strategy and possible policy warnings after restarting is recommended.
Closing a Google Ads account: cancellation through Account status
The official answer to how to cancel Google Ads is on Google’s canceling a Google Ads account page. Two conditions are required for the cancellation button to appear: the user must have ‘Admin’ access and billing setup must be complete. Users with Standard access do not see the cancellation option.
- In the Google Ads account, open the Admin menu and go to Account settings.
- Click the Account status dropdown to expand the section.
- Select Cancel my account.
According to Google, all advertisements stop serving within 24 hours after cancellation, and a refund for the remaining refundable balance begins automatically. If the person with Admin access no longer works for the business, Google recommends contacting Google Ads Support with the Customer ID, login email address and account billing information. How to find official support channels is explained separately in the article on Google Ads customer service .

How is a client account under a manager account canceled?
A manager account (MCC) can cancel only client accounts it owns through its own interface. According to Google’s page on canceling client accounts, select the account under Accounts and then Management in the manager account and use Cancel in the Edit menu. The business owner can also close the same account through their own login using the normal cancellation steps above.
The final bill after cancellation: how are remaining costs charged?
Advertising costs incurred up to cancellation must still be paid; cancellation does not erase past spending. According to Google’s managing billing after cancellation page, if the account has an unpaid balance, it is automatically collected from the primary payment method within the following 31 days. This final charge covers costs accrued before cancellation but not yet billed.
A card charge a few days after cancellation is often this final charge, which is what most surprises businesses researching how to close Google Ads. Depending on the payment setting, the remaining amount appears in different places on the Summary page under Billing:
- Automatic payment accounts: Unpaid costs appear under ‘Balance.’
- Manual payment accounts: There is no unpaid balance; the remaining prepaid amount enters the refund process.
- Accounts using monthly invoicing: The amount appears under ‘Amount due’; check Transactions for any new ‘Campaign activity’ item after the date advertisements stopped.
If the registered card has expired, update it with a valid payment method to avoid delaying the final payment. Where charges shown on a card statement come from is covered in detail in the article why Google Ads is charging money , and invoice documents in the Google Ads invoice guide. Confirming invoice accounting entries with the accountant is recommended.
How long does a prepaid balance refund take?
Following Google Ads cancellation, the refundable amount remaining in the account is sent back to the original payment method. Google states that the process usually takes four to 12 weeks, including the bank processing the credit. For credit-card or direct-debit payments, Google generally processes refunds within two weeks; the bank may take another 10 business days to credit the account.
For payments made by bank transfer, the process may take longer and bank account information may be requested on the Billing settings page. Refund status is tracked on Billing summary. If four weeks have passed since the initial refund request, Google recommends contacting support.
The only significant item excluded from refunds is promotional credit; amounts added through coupons or offers are not refunded. If only campaigns are paused without fully canceling the account, the remaining prepaid amount waits in the account. Google also states that a balance refund can be obtained only after the account is officially canceled.
Closing or restructuring? A second set of eyes at decision time
The wish to stop advertising often comes from feeling the budget is being wasted; sometimes the problem lies in targeting or conversion measurement rather than the account itself. The account is examined in a free preliminary assessment; if closing is more appropriate, the steps are planned together, with ownership and the balance remaining safely with the business.
Reopening a Google Ads account
In most cases, a canceled account is not considered deleted; according to Google’s reactivating a canceled account page, reactivation is free. As with cancellation, only users with Admin access may reopen a Google Ads account. The steps are in a slightly different menu from the cancellation screen:
- Go to Preferences in the Admin menu.
- Expand Account status.
- Select Reactivate my account; the account status becomes ‘Active.’
The critical point often missed here is that campaigns left active at cancellation resume serving when the account is reactivated. Paused campaigns remain on hold until manually enabled. If advertising should not start automatically, pause campaigns before reactivating.
Limits on reactivation
Google states that it may sometimes request verification of payment information and document submission through payments.google.com, and documents are reviewed within 48 hours. If no advertisements run for three months after reactivation, the account is automatically canceled again. For long-inactive accounts, the reactivation option may not appear at all; accounts without spending for more than 15 months are also automatically canceled by Google. An account suspended for policy violations may not be reopened this way; that situation is addressed separately in the article Google Ads account suspended .
When agency work ends: unlinking the manager account (MCC)
When work with an agency or freelancer ends, canceling the account is often unnecessary; unlinking the manager account is sufficient. According to Google’s about unlinking page, an unlinked individual account does not lose its campaign history or access to Google Ads features. The account owner can subsequently link to a new manager account.
On the business’s side, the link is removed as follows:
- Go to Access and security in the Admin menu.
- Select the Managers subpage.
- In the row for the manager account to unlink, select Remove access from the Actions column.
- Review the preview and confirm with Unlink.
Google states that a client account must have at least one user with access for a manager account to unlink it. If the account uses monthly invoicing and the unlinked account is the paying manager, advertisements stop unless billing arrangements are changed beforehand. Shared remarketing lists and cross-account conversion tags also stop working in this account once the link is removed.
In whose name was the account opened?
According to Google’s page on client account ownership, a manager automatically becomes owner when it creates a new account itself; linking an existing account does not transfer ownership by default. When working with us, the advertising account is opened under the business’s own Google Account; we are added only as managers, and the business’s own email remains in the account with Admin access. When work ends, the link is removed and account history and the payment profile stay with the business.
Does closing Google Ads delete the Google Account, Analytics and Business Profile?
Google’s cancellation steps cover only the Google Ads account; the Google Account linked to the same email is not closed by this action. The question of how to close Google Ads therefore concerns only the advertising account; deleting the Google Account is an entirely separate process. Google states that old account data remains accessible after cancellation by signing in with the same email address. The reactivation page also treats a separately deleted Google Account as a distinct situation and says the Google Account must first be recovered.
A Google Analytics property, Google Business Profile and Merchant Center are separate products; Google’s cancellation pages do not say these products are deleted. Nevertheless, some data is affected after cancellation:
- Remarketing lists belonging to the account are set to ‘Closed,’ and no new users are added.
- Within approximately one month, list membership duration is reduced to one day and users leave the lists.
- Lists shared with other accounts become unavailable for use in those accounts.
- Dynamic remarketing parameters are deleted.
Canceled accounts also cannot be accessed through the Google Ads API; a dashboard linked to a reporting tool loses its data flow. If campaign history may be needed later, exporting reports before cancellation is a practical precaution.
Common mistakes when canceling Google Ads and the correct method
The problems most commonly seen in businesses searching how to close Google Ads involve sequence rather than technical issues. The main situations and their correct alternatives are:
- Assuming pausing a campaign ends all payments: Pausing stops new costs, but accrued amounts are charged to the card under automatic payments when the threshold is reached or on the first day of the month. A prepaid balance remains in the account.
- Forgetting the manager account: If the agency’s manager account stays linked, access continues; the link must be removed separately.
- The agency being the only Admin user: If the business’s own email lacks Admin access, cancellation, reactivation and unlinking cannot be performed.
- Canceling with active campaigns and reopening later: Those campaigns resume serving automatically on reactivation.
- Removing a campaign and then wanting it back: A removed campaign is not restored; only its settings can be copied.
- Failing to update an expired card: The final invoice cannot be collected and the account remains in debt.
The correct sequence is broadly as follows: first confirm Admin access for the business’s own email, then obtain reports, pause campaigns and cancel the account if the decision is clear. Finally, monitor the last charge and refund status in Billing summary.
Closing completely or restructuring? Common practice and our approach
In common practice, a business getting no results from advertising closes the account, opens a new one from scratch a few months later and leaves all previous data behind. In our approach, the reason for closing is identified first: is the problem budget, targeting, measurement or channel selection? If organic visibility is more suitable than advertising, the Google Ads or SEO comparison helps clarify that decision.
Our Maltepe-based studio has managed advertising accounts under businesses’ own accounts since 2019; the account, payment profile and historical data always remain with the business. When asked how to close Google Ads, our first step is to check whether the business’s own email has Admin access. If the account is to close, the balance, linked accounts and final invoice are checked together step by step. Our Google advertising management service starts at 9,000 TL per month; the advertising budget paid to Google is not included.
Onur Freelance is not an official Google support channel; it does not cancel accounts, approve refunds or collect amounts payable to Google on Google’s behalf. Google Ads Support has the final word on account-specific refund and billing issues.
Keep ownership with the business even if the account closes

Frequently asked questions
How do you close Google Ads?
The entire account is closed through Admin > Account settings > Account status > Cancel my account. If advertising will stop temporarily, pausing campaigns through the Campaigns screen is sufficient instead of canceling the account.
Can a Google Ads account be completely deleted?
A Google Ads account is not deleted, it is canceled. The canceled account continues to appear in the account list and can be reactivated if needed; past campaign and invoice records are also preserved.
How do you cancel a Google Ads subscription?
Since Google Ads is not a monthly subscription, there is no separate subscription cancellation. To stop charges to the card, campaigns are paused or the account is canceled; after cancellation, only the ad spend incurred up to that day is charged.
What is the difference between pausing a campaign and canceling an account?
When paused, advertisements are not shown, but the account, payment settings and remaining balance stay in place. When the account is canceled, all advertisements stop within 24 hours and a refund for the refundable balance begins automatically.
What happens to remaining money when a Google Ads account is canceled?
The refundable balance is sent back to the original payment method; Google states that the process usually takes four to 12 weeks. Promotional credits are not refunded.
Why was my card charged after canceling the account?
Cancellation does not erase advertising costs already incurred. Google automatically collects the unpaid balance from the primary payment method within 31 days after cancellation.
Can a canceled Google Ads account be reopened?
In most cases, yes; a user with Admin access follows Admin > Preferences > Account status > Reactivate my account, and the process is free. This option may be unavailable for long-inactive accounts or accounts suspended for policy violations.
Does canceling a Google Ads account delete the Google Account?
No; cancellation covers only the Google Ads account, and old account data can be accessed by signing in with the same email. Deleting the Google Account is a separate process.
Must the account be closed when agency work ends?
Usually not; unlink the manager account through Access and security > Managers. According to Google, an unlinked account retains its campaign history and can link to a new manager.
What is the fee for support with account cancellation and unlinking?
At Onur Freelance, Google advertising management starts at 9,000 TL per month, excluding the advertising budget; the account review before closing takes place in a free preliminary assessment. Onur Freelance is not an official Google support channel.
